Be safe, be seen

As the days start getting shorter, walking carries more risk, especially at night. It’s always better to be safe by being seen.

Here’s some great advice for staying safe while walking, from Salem-Keizer School District:

  1. Wear bright or reflective clothing
    1. Light-colored clothes during the day help.
    1. Reflective gear, safety vests, or items that reflect light are especially important in low light or after dark.
    1. Carry a flashlight, especially at dawn, dusk, or in overcast/rainy/foggy weather.
  • Stay alert / distracted-free
    • Avoid headphones, texting, or other distractions when walking or crossing.
    • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don’t assume drivers see you.
  • Use crosswalks, sidewalks, marked paths
    • When available, always use sidewalks. If there are none, walk facing traffic and stay close to the edge.
    • Cross at marked crosswalks; obey crossing guards. Teach children how to judge when it’s safe.
  • Plan the route & arrival/dismissal times
    • Know safe routes to school.
    • Arrive early so there’s no rushing. Rushing tends to lead to risky behavior.
    • Use “remote drop-off” locations when possible: drop students a few blocks away where traffic is lighter, then walk the rest.
