Staying safe when working at night
Many young workers have jobs that take place in hours of darkness.

Many jobs held by young workers are in retail or food establishments that operate into hours of darkness. This is especially true as the days get shorter and the weather cools.

Talk with your employer about any changes to procedures during nighttime hours, and share some of these ideas:

  • Empty garbage, bring in carts, or do outside clean up in pairs.
  • Control access to building and consider locking some of the doors.
  • Park in well-lit areas and not near any bushes or obstructions.
  • Make eye contact and greet every customer coming into the business.
  • Be on the lookout for suspicious behavior and report it immediately.
  • If walking or riding a bike in darkness, equip yourself with high visibility garments like reflective vests. Add lights to bikes.
